Fundraiser: Kremlin Kleptocrats and how to counter them - An Evening with Bill Browder

    Bill Browder

Bill Browder and Edward Lucas have been allies for more than a decade, alerting the West to the danger of foreign corruption and its enablers.

Bill is a Nobel Peace Prize nominee human rights campaigner. Once the leading western investor in Russia, he has exposed the greed and brutality at the heart of Vladimir Putin’s regime. He now campaigns against illicit finance — dirty money — and against authoritarian regimes' abuse of the international legal system, notably their intimidation of critics through Interpol Red Notices.

Bill has pioneered Magnitsky sanctions, named after murdered Russian whistle-blower Sergei Magnitsky, which are now in place in the US, Canada, Britain and other jurisdictions.

His prize-winning book "Red Notice" is on sale.

Fundraiser - An Evening with Vince Cable

    Vince Cable

Vince Cable and Edward Lucas, both leaders within their respective fields, come together to provide gripping, insightful and accessible insights into UK-China relations.

The exposure of an alleged Chinese agent at Westminster has highlighted the controversy over the country's relationship with the People's Republic.

The Cities of London & Westminster Liberal Democrats are pleased to host this topical discussion on a vital issue that touches foreign and domestic policy.

Former Liberal Democrat leader Sir Vince Cable is the author of The China Conundrum: Engagement or Conflict, a book that argues against a US-led “cold war” with China.

"Snubbing modern China will do nothing for human rights, domestic security or global stability. We should be committed to working with and influencing this rising superpower – without illusions, but also without fear.” he says.

Edward Lucas, prospective parliamentary candidate for the Cities of London & Westminster, is the former editor of the China Influence Monitor, a weekly newsletter that exposes and counters Chinese Communist Party influence in the West.

He coined the phrase “Hegemonic Discourse Control” to describe Chinese Communist Party attempts to silence critics and control discussion. “Our media, academic and political freedom are at risk” he argues.

So who’s wrong? Are the “China-hawks” creating an unnecessary and fruitless confrontation? Or are the “China-doves” paving the way to the West’s eclipse by a totalitarian superpower?

Come and decide for yourself, following an evening of simmering discussion.

There will be a signing and copies of The China Conundrum: Engagement or Conflict will be on sale at the event.

Fundraiser: Climate Change the Forgotten Crisis - An Evening with Tom Burke

    Tom Burke

The Climate Crisis as COP26 drew the world's attention three months ago. Since then the fuel crisis, the conflict in Ukraine and partygate have pulled the headlines away. Pressure seems to be growing to row back on the COP26 commitments.

The Cities of London & Westminster Liberal Democrats are pleased to host a discussion on this vital but neglected issue.

Tom Burke is co-founder and chair of European Climate change think tank E3G and former Friends of the Earth director. E3G's mission is to translate climate politics, economics and policies into action. Tom is also Chairman of the China Dialogue Trust, Climate Advisor to governments and companies in the UK and visiting Professor at both Imperial College and UCL

Alistair Barr will be the moderator for this event. He is the vice-chair of the Cities of London & Westminster Borough local party and candidate for Marylebone ward in the May local elections.

Climate change cannot be left to change itself. Come and give it the attention it deserves.

Ukraine at War: United We Stand, Divided We Fall

    Ukraine at War

Together with most of the world, the Czech Centre strongly condemns the Russian attack on Ukraine. Although one can find similarities with the 1968 invasion of Czechoslovakia, the full-scale military attack on Ukraine is unprecedented and absolutely unjustifiable under any circumstances.

Join us to discuss the impact and possible detrimental outcomes of the war in Ukraine with leading experts on Eastern Europe and Russia, to better comprehend the roots and causes of the Russian aggression as well as to explore our options of support and solidarity with Ukraine and its citizens.

    Panel speakers are:-

Edward LucasParliamentary Spokesperson for The Cities of London & Westminster & expert on Central and Eastern European politics, economics and security

Rt Rev. Kenneth Nowakowski, the Eparchial Bishop of the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of the Holy Family of London

Marina Pesenti, former Head of Ukrainian Institute  London

James Rodgers, former BBC Correspondent in Moscow

Pavel Seifter, former Czech Ambassador to the UK.

    Together they will:

    - Explore the roots of the Russian invasion from the collapse of the Soviet Union and the establishment of Ukraine to the rise of Vladimir Putin, Russia’s seizure of Crimea and current war.

    - Discuss possible consequences of the war while unpicking the Kremlin’s ideology and saluting the bravery of ordinary Ukrainians. Ask your questions and find out what we can do to help.

There is Nothing for You Here: Finding Opportunity in the 21st Century - An Evening with Dr. Fiona Hill

Dr. Fiona Hill’s journey from a working-class childhood in Bishop Auckland to the heights of power in Washington DC is the subject of her searing new book “There Is Nothing for You Here: Finding Opportunity in the 21st Century”.

She contrasts the waste and unfairness of the British class system with the opportunities she found in the United States, while also highlighting American discrimination based on race and sex.

As one of the United States’ top Russia-watchers, she has served both the Obama and Trump administrations.

Dr. Hill's book will be available to purchase at the event.

Fundraiser: The Use & Abuse of History - An Evening with Sir Antony Beevor FRSL

    Anthony Beevor

Britain’s best-selling historian in conversation with our PPC Edward Lucas
Sir Antony Beevor has written 13 books, translated into 33 languages with over eight million copies sold.
His work includes bestselling accounts of the Soviet conquest of Berlin in 1945 and the battle of Stalingrad. His latest book, published on May 26, is Russia – Revolution and Civil War, 1917-1921.
Sir Antony's deep archival research and vivid style bring alive the climactic events in twentieth century history and have brought him numerous prizes and awards.
At a time when Vladimir Putin uses the events of World War Two to justify his “denazification” of Ukraine, and the legacy of the Soviet past becomes ever more visible in modern Russia, Sir Antony’s expertise could not be more topical. Myths and misapprehensions about the past erode and distort our understanding of current events — and have led directly to devastating war in Europe.
Sir Antony will be in discussion with Edward Lucas, who is the author of five books including Deception (on east-west espionage) and the acclaimed New Cold War (2008). Edward was selected as Liberal Democrat prospective parliamentary candidate for the Cities of London and Westminster in September 2021.

    URGENT UPDATE

We are sorry to say that Antony has just emailed to say he has tested positive for COVID-19. Coupled with the tube strike, this means that we cannot go ahead with the event at the National Liberal Club as planned on Monday 6th June, 2022.
However we will host it via Zoom. If you have purchased a ticket, expect the following via email from Constance (Head of Events):
    1) Zoom link - Participate in discussion
    2) Q&A link - Ask questions :)
If you have not purchased a ticket, but would like to join us, you can watch the live-stream via Twitter

We look forward to seeing you at least in electronic form on Monday.
Thank you again for your interest in this event, and for your support for Edward Lucas’s campaign to topple the stale duopoly in Cities of London and Westminster!
